Tuesday afternoon, about one mile from Barack Obama's Chicago home, Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed with a handgun. The police believe the shooting to be a case of mistaken identity relating to an ongoing turf war between area gangs. Pendleton recently performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration with her high school band.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told the AP that it's simply a case of "Mistaken identity --wrong place at the wrong time."
Yesterday, White House Spokesperson Jay Carney appeared at the podium and used the incident to spotlight the President's gun control initiatives.
"The President has more than once, when he talks about gun violence in American, referred not just to the horror of Newtown or Aurora or Virginia Tech or Oak Creek, but to shootings on the corner in Chicago and other parts of the country," said Carney. "And this is just another example of the problem that we need to deal with.
Similarly, Chicago's second most famous race-baiting man of the cloth, Father Michael Pfleger, chimed in to announce that "This is Sandy Hook. This is Connecticut. This is Newtown, right here. We have to be just as outraged."
Since the incident, members of the mainstream media have been falling all over themselves, using tragedy to further their anti-2nd Amendment witch hunt.
To do this, all they have to do is ignore the facts of the case.
First - and it feels ridiculous to have to keep pointing this out - Chicago already has some of the toughest gun control laws in the country. Contrary to what Jay Carney claims, Obama has been criticized repeatedly for failing to mention the crime rate there, specifically because it doesn't support his claim that incrased gun control will reduce crime. If the Chicago's existing laws have done nothing to lower the murder rate, why are we supposed to believe a new batch of restrictions will change the situation?
Second, the Chicago police have said the murder was committed as part of a turf war. One would suspect that Southside gang-bangers aren't going to the police, obtaining permits, or going through background checks in order to purchase legal weapons. As is the case with the overwhelming majority of murders, the gun used was more than likely obtained and owned illegally. Since Obama's gun control initiatives only target law-abiding citizens, we have no reason to assume that they would have done anything to deter this killer.
Finally, even if - by some miracle - it was purchased legally, there's no way of knowing that the gun in question would have been restricted under the Administration's desired policies. Even the police don't know what type of firearm it was. They think it was a handgun. Beyond that, they have no information. So far, there's absolutely no evidence indicating that the pistol which killed Hadiya Pendleton would have been subject to any new weapon regulation.
Despite all of this, the media and gun control ghouls have decided that, if only Obama had his way, this never would have happened.
Facts and logic be damnned, there's a murder to exploit. The Obama-faithful press has no intention of letting reality get in the way.
